This job was to create a low retaining wall, about 6m x 0.5m, more of a feature than anything heavy-duty. However plenty of hardcore went in the back anyway as the building stone (what looked like recovered york paving supplied by the client) was in limited supply.
The client was going to lower the ground level in front of this new wall to provide a patio area, and wanted to install a retaining wall against the hedge bank that would also be a point of interest.
Getting started
The challenge on this build was working in the fairly narrow trench, below ground-level, for the whole build. It meant I was often kneeling or walking on the wall as it went up. I guess that’s one way to confirm your stones are laid well.
Build underway
The wall was done in 4 days and consumed almost all the available stone, it was a good job I had pulled out the better sized flat stones for the top early on and kept them aside!
